Over two thousand key stakeholders from across Sub-Saharan Africa gathered at the just concluded Lagos Leather Fair (LLF) 5 to discuss the future of the Nigerian leather industry.

The 2-day event which sought to reiterate the potential economic impact of the leather sector on the Nigerian economy had in attendance over 2000 key stakeholders including the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adeniyi Adebayo, and Ex-Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke.

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adeniyi Adebayo, said his ministry will continue to drive the potential of the leather industry in Nigeria and Africa.

Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adeniyi Adebayo said "We are proud of the good works of Lagos Leather Fair over the past 5 years, they have created a solid platform where everyone within the leather ecosystem can meet up and hold conversations on how to move the industry forward.

The Convener of the Lagos Leather Fair, Femi Olayebi, expressed her delight about the large gathering and the quality of conversations had at the fair. She said "despite the impact of the pandemic, we have seen that industry players have continues to hone their craftsmanship, their skills, and their innovation”…

The fair also featured masterclass conversations on cross-border payments for SMEs and the role of the AFCFTA in aiding intra-African trade amongst other side attractions.

#throwbackthursday to the game changing digital showcase of #PinkLabelCongo from @hanifaofficial where Anifa Mvuemba gave everyone a front row seat!

On Friday, May 22, 2020, Congolese contemporary designer Hanifa, Anifa Mvuemba debuted her latest collection via 3D models on Instagram Live. She changed the game!

The Instagram Live fashion show featured 3D models "sashaying" eloquently down the screen with garments draped on their three-dimensional curves.

She had prefaced her showcase with a series of clips highlighting the impact of mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, an issue Mvuemba was keen that her designs reflect.

The Congo produces more than 60% of the world's cobalt, which is used in lithium batteries. The country and its people have suffered greatly as a result: toxic chemicals have polluted the air and water, and children as young as six have been forced to work in mines.

Every piece in the collection told a story, from a sensational colourful backless ribbed dress representing the Congo flag colours to a curve-hugging maxi dress complete with detailed pockets and side ruching details to the finale's floor length silk gown emblazoned with grassy hills and rivers.

That was a watershed moment in fashion history!
